Sometime someday I will probably work with a non-profit organization in some form or another. The type of organization I’d like to be involved with is really one of three different areas of interest. My first choice would definitely be some kind of social justice non-profit. I’m specifically concerned with organizations that support local LGBT youth. It’s really important to work they are doing that can really improve the lives of so many young people. This type of organization really interests me though because of the closeness I have with them. When I was in high school, one of my friends was disowned by her mother at age 17 just for being transgender. A non-profit organization she was involved with called GLSEN reached out to her in order to offer support and connections to more help. Other organizations like this in Maine include:
- OUT Maine
- Maine Transgender Network
- Equality Maine
- A larger, national organization like this is The Trevor Project.
I’m also highly interested in organizations concerned with home health and end-of-life care for senior citizens and special needs children. Most of my family works in the health care field, specifically in this branch of healthcare. These types of services can be really expensive and stressful for patients and their families. Some examples of this type of organization include:
