I have never really thought of news journalism to be a kind of narrative storytelling, but I can see that it definitely is after reading this chapter. My eye was particularly drawn to the idea of using a theme as a driving force in a feature story. According to the text, the theme is ultimately why people want to read stories. This makes sense to me; if you can connect to a story in some way, shape or form, then it makes the story automatically more interesting. My feature story could connect to students because phishing attempts are targeting their need to earn money fast. However, it could also reach parents who are concerned about their child’s safety because of a quote I used that brought a more emotional aspect. It is also important to note how specific you should be when writing in this form. I’d never thought of it in the way that’s presented in the ladder of details. The bottom being the least specific dog and the top being the most specific Lhasa apso named Joe. Specificity brings the reader closer to the issue.
